The outbreak of ethnic violence in Manipur on May 3, 2023, was a significant challenge for the churches of northeast India, particularly the NEICC, in terms of restoring peace and providing aid to the affected people. According to the latest report published in The Shillong Times on Sept 15, 2023, 175 people lost their lives, with 79 dead bodies claimed and 96 remaining unclaimed. Additionally, 1,108 people were injured, 32 are still missing, and 5,172 cases of arson were reported. Furthermore, 386 religious structures, mostly churches, were burnt or vandalized, and about 60,000 people were displaced.
To address the dire situation in Manipur, the Peace Centre has proposed the ‘Manipur Relief, Rehabilitation and Restoration Project’ (The M3R Project). The project aims to raise funds by requesting donations from the units, concerned individuals and other organizations and then channeling these funds effectively. The Peace Centre also plans to collaborate with other organizations wherever possible to aid the people of Manipur.
